The recent uproar surrounding a single mother, Loh Siew Hong, whom her three children were converted to Islam without her permission and was separated from her for three years despite having been granted a full custody of the three children back in 2019. Fortunately, in a much-anticipated court decision, Loh’s habeas corpus application to regain the custody of her three children was granted by the High Court and she was reunited with her three children. This decision by the court has invited mixed views from the public. Some were delighted that Loh is finally reunited with her children. However, several entities such as Muslim NGOs, including the Perlis mufti, Datuk Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin were very vocal on their concern that this reunification would jeopardize the children’s status as Muslims.
