June Edition: The Right to Life and Death Penalty in Malaysia

By: Danial Ashraf Bin Ghazali

The issue of the death penalty was debated ad nauseam, as different perspectives of morality and contrasting opinions on the approach to obtaining justice were tossed into the discussion. On one side, the death penalty was seen as a symbol of justice to retribute the repercussions of crimes that have been committed. While on the other hand, it was seen as a terminal punishment that infringes the basic human right to life from a legal viewpoint, transgressing the sanctity of life from a more spiritual, ethical and moral approach. Regardless of the stance on the issue, nooses are still hanging at the prison gallows as people are sent to death row at present. In Malaysia, as of June 2022, there are more than 1,341 people on death row with the latest person being sentenced to death by Kota Bharu High Court on 13 June 2022.
